HUMAN RIGHTS

REVOCATION OF HAND-PULLED RICKSHAWS

The Hill station of Mussoorie at its inception attracted the British and the Indian royalty. This invited the practice of human laborers ( "coolies" ) pulling  hand-pulled rickshaws carrying the elite. This inhuman practice continued for 150 years when a social reformist movement was spearheaded by Mr. Harsh Mander. Dr. Sanon, as a close aide to Harsh, actively participated in this campaign and after the revocation of hand-pulled rickshaws, continues till date to address free of cost, the health issues of these laborers.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Affirmative action for the educationally backward residents of Mussoorie was initiated by Dr. Sanon in 19____. This entailed petitioning the matter before the District Magistrate of Dehradoon. As a result of perseverant follow up of the matter for more than 2 years, the authorities included residents of Mussoorie as authorized beneficiaries of the reserved category of "Other Backward Classes". This allowed deserving students

from Mussoorie to obtain admission to professional colleges and Universities under a reserved category.
